We believe that local democracy, engaged citizens, and vibrant communities go hand in hand. We also believe that the well-being of our provinces, regions, and states -- and our country -- depends on healthy grassroots democracy. Democracy, after all, is not something we consume, whether we are citizens or elected representative or government workers: it is something we produce. We grow it. And democracy begins to grow from the grassroots up.

That is why our work is based on putting local politics and local governments first. Our people want to help you:

• get fellow citizens involved so that local government is an exciting, creative community project
  everyone can get behind;
• be clear in your own mind about the basis of democratic practices and institutions, and
  strengthen these -- and invent new practices and institutions -- so that citizens have local
  government that makes them proud;
• build effective relationships among citizens, within the community and between the community
  and its elected representatives, and public officials, so that local leaders can advance local priorities with greater public understanding, and support.
